Week 6- Culture

Fashion is ever-changing! Or in this case more in cycles of adaptation.

I think fashion is really awesome and I spend a lot of time thinking and reading about it. Fashion is interesting because of the ways that it goes in and out of style. Some articles of clothing, aesthetics, toys, etc. are super popular for a couple years, they will very quickly lose momentum to not be seen again for decades, but then make a crazy come back into society. Others are here to stay and have been appreciated for years.

Let's jump into the Cycle of Fashion Adaptation. The cycle is described through Classics, Fads, and Fashions.

Classics are described as something that will be accepted for a very long period of time.

When I think of something that is a classic, I think of hardwood flooring in a home. This is always a go-to and something that will be liked for many years to come. It is not going out of style soon, although some variations will be less appealing than others over long periods of time, it is pretty much a safe bet to keep hardwood flooring in a home, as it is generally appealing. Another example I can think of as a classic article of clothing are Sperry's shoes. My dad, who was a teen throughout the late 60's told me all that time that Sperry's were the coolest shoe to wear, and even today they are popular still.

Fads are short-lived fashion trends.

A huge fad I can think of is Beanie Babies. These plush toys were all the rage at one point, but have now become something of the past that is now collected. Everyone wanted a Beanie Baby at one point, but the fad quickly fell off and they are pretty hard to find.

Fashion is the social diffusion in which new styles are adopted by some groups of consumers.

Today fashion trends are looping back. Some huge fashions today are high-waisted straight-leg jeans. Other fashions include gold jewelry, chunky dad-like sneakers, and trench coats. These lost some steam, but have been making a comeback recently.
